On October 26th members had an extra meeting. We were privileged to be allowed a visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory at Sidmouth in South Devon. Members met at the premises which are located to the east of Sidmouth in a quiet rural location. We were then shown round the premises. Highlights included information about Satellites such as MeteoSat in the gathering of information for weather forecasting, this included viewing a live signal being received by the stations own equipment. Members also toured two of the main telescopes on the site, and were allowed to view both the moon and Venus through these. The Norman Lockyer Observatory also had samples of 'MoonRock' available for members to see. The evening was completed by a fascinating Planetarium show, which was presented by one of the Astronomy club members who meet there. We were also shown a selection of his own slides taken of the night sky, using both telephoto lenses and telescopes. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, and our thanks go to all who made it possible. |
